Birtenshaw is a registered charity (1092798). Established in Bromley Cross, Bolton in 1956. Birtenshaw provides a unique range of services for children and young adults with physical disability, including complex health needs and / or learning disability, including Autism Spectrum Conditions.
Through Birtenshaw Special School and Birtenshaw College we provide special education for children and young people with Special Education Needs and Disability (SEND), aged from 3 years old into young adulthood up to 25 years old.
Birtenshaw’s special education services are complimented by our care services, which include several children’s homes, domiciliary care, supported tenancies as well as children’s and adult short breaks centre.
Our aim is to improve the quality of life of all the people we support so that they may become confident and independent members of the community, fulfilling their individual potential.
Our mission is to Brighten Lives and Build Futures for young people with Special Education Needs and Disability in Bolton, across the North West and beyond.
Birtenshaw School provides the ideal physical environment for the specialist learning needs of our pupils.
With our specially designed building and our purpose-built facilities, we provide a spacious, calm and safe environment in which young people can thrive; and our facilities fully support our creative learning curriculum and “Total Communication” approach to our specialised area of education. Classrooms are equipped with all of the state-of-the-art education technology such as touch screens and iPads which you would expect to find in a modern school.
In addition, we have the following specialist facilities which underpin our special education needs functions by working with sensory experiences (sight, sound, touch, smell etc) to develop senses, co-ordination and communication within the pupil, promoting interaction, concentration, calmness and confidence.
- Sensory Integration Room
- Multisensory Dark Room
- On-site Hydrotherapy Pool with Multisensory Sound and Light System
- Soft Play Area
The school’s multisensory input is supported by our full-time occupational therapist who completes a detailed sensory profile for the individual pupil, producing a ‘sensory diet’ for our professionally trained staff to follow. Outside of the classroom, we have provided safe enclosed outdoor play spaces and a horticultural garden. We also have a developing sensory garden.
The college provides both full-time and seasonal courses leading up to accredited qualifications, the college also offers enrichment day places. Birtenshaw College provides a unique further education opportunity which works to develop skills for independent living, literacy and numeracy, work-based vocational skills, as well as therapeutic learning activities. Our classes are taught by qualified and experienced teachers, specialists in Special Education Needs, and each group is supported by a team of Learning Support Assistants.
